I was informed that my financial aid would not cover my classes. I even tried to drop the classes which I was told I would be billed in full for anyway. I received a bill for over $5,000 for 2 classes and was requested to setup a payment plan. I contacted them and was told I would have to pay $700 a month. I explained I am self employed and summer is slow for me, especially supporting 3 children and that’s why my estimated family contribution was $0. I heard nothing back. I then received a bill for almost $4000 and replied within 24 hours explaining again that I could not pay $700 a month and could we work out a temporary payment plan until my work picked up in the fall. This was on June 17th. I finally received a response on June 19th which stated they sent my account to collections on the 19th and there was nothing I could do. Here was their response. Thank you for contacting the Office of Student Accounts. Unfortunately, we cannot accept payments or set up a payment plan for your balance. UMUC is a state owned institution and as such must refer uncollected accounts (over $50) to SCCU within an allotted period of time. Your balance was transferred to the State Central Collections Unit (SCCU) on June 19, 2014 for further collection. Once a balance has been transferred to SCCU, it must be paid in full at SCCU. Please note that SCCU adds on a 17% collections fee and reports to all major credit bureaus. All requests for services (registration, transcripts, diplomas, commencement reviews, etc.) will be denied until all debts are paid in full. You may contact SCCU at 1-800-705-3493 to make a payment or payment arrangements. If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to email us at (email address removed by Defaulters.com admin) You can also call our office at 1-800-888-UMUC, and/or review additional information at www.umuc.edu/students/payments/penalties/sccu.cfm.
