Report Filed: Tomtom Tomtom nonexistent “warranty” Amsterdam, Holland? not in the US, they say Internet!!
On 17 June 2015 I paid $96.29 at Best Buy for a Tomtom VIA1515M, planning to learn how to use it for summer travel. In late July I went from NY to DC for two nights, and it constantly misdirected me, so I ignored it. Then two weeks ago (September 1) I gave it another chance. I took it to Oregon with me, and it was worse. Even though I had NEVER programmed the local airport into it, it constantly directed me (TWICE!) back to the airport that I had just left, wasting time and gas. Often it would simply FORGET its marching orders. I would turn the motor off, leave, then get back in the car and turn the motor on, and it had forgotten everything, and had to be reprogrammed. Worse even than THAT, was that in the middle of directing me on a route that seemed probable, it would suddenly begin to direct me to an address I hadnu2019t asked for since the July trip. Or it would call out u201cLeft (or Right) Turn!u201d on an open stretch of road, or u201cToll!u201d when there wasnu2019t one for many states, or u201cMake a U-turnu201d when I KNEW I was going the right way. Sometimes the DING DING DING bell would ring when I was nowhere near where I was going, or it would be unable, in downtown Portland, to get a GPS signal! You couldnu2019t see the entire route clearly to learn when it went wrong. Occasionally it would tell me that my destination (which I had programmed in for an houru2019s drive) was u201cThree time zones awayu201d(!) Further, when it DID give correct directions, it was often after we had passed the street or intersection I needed. Such time lags made it useless. Occasionally when we were near enough to my desired address, as I had decided by using a paper MAP, it would get me the last few blocks correctly. But thatu2019s not good enough. If you canu2019t trust it, you canu2019t trust it. Everyone I know uses FREE apps with their smart phones, and none of them seem to have this problem. Why did I pay for this useless item? Unfortunately, I read all the bad reviews AFTER I had purchased it. I grant I havenu2019t learned the system perfectly since Iu2019ve tried to use it so little, but it should have performed adequately on simple point A to point B directions. I would like to return this amnesiac, psychotic piece of buggy junk for a full refund. However, apparently the one-year “warranty”” only exists if you buy it directly from THEM
